The Serengeti is the most famous safari destination in the world. Its name comes from the Maasai word “siringet,” meaning “endless plains.” That is exactly what you find here: golden grasslands stretching as far as the eye can see. This vast park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the stage for one of nature’s greatest shows, the Great Migration.
The Great Migration
Every year, more than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras move in a giant circle across the Serengeti. They follow the rains in search of fresh grass. From December to March, they gather on the southern plains to give birth. From July to November, they brave the crocodile-filled Mara River in the dramatic river crossings. It is the largest movement of land animals on Earth.
Big Cat Country
The Serengeti is one of the best places in Africa to see big cats. The central Seronera Valley has water all year, so lions, leopards and cheetahs are seen almost daily. Large lion prides rule the plains. Leopards rest in the branches of sausage trees. Cheetahs sprint across the open grass in search of prey.
More Than the Migration
Even away from the migration, the Serengeti teems with life. Elephants, giraffes, hippos and buffalo are common. Rocky outcrops called kopjes rise from the plains and shelter lions and hyraxes. The park is huge, so different areas offer great game viewing at different times of year.
Best Time to Visit
The Serengeti is a year-round destination. The dry season, from June to October, brings easy game viewing and the river crossings in the north. The green season brings the calving herds and beautiful scenery in the south. We time your visit to wherever the herds are moving.
Where to Stay
Our Serengeti lodges and camps are placed for prime game viewing in every season. Enjoy stylish comfort at Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge or panoramic views at Lahia Tented Lodge. Classic camps like Serengeti Kati Kati and Thorn Tree Camp put you in big-cat country. For the migration, we move with the herds to seasonal camps in Ndutu and the Mara region.
