Hippo Trails Camp
Banagi Hill, near Retima Hippo Pool, Serengeti
Hippo Trails Camp has one of the best locations in the Serengeti. It sits on the slopes of Banagi Hill, about 21 kilometers from Seronera airstrip. The famous Retima Hippo Pool is just minutes away. There, dozens of hippos crowd and splash in the river.
Twelve Tents with River Views
The camp has twelve tents on raised wooden platforms. Each one has a lovely view of the river below. Inside are king or twin beds, a writing desk and stylish furnishings. The bathrooms have flush toilets, hot running water and a large vanity area. The whole camp runs on solar power, including the hot water.
Camp Life and Dining
Meals are fresh, hearty and served with a smile. The dining and lounge areas face the river view. Evenings end around the fire, swapping sighting stories. The staff are known for their warmth and humor.
Wildlife on the Doorstep
Water stays in this area all year, so wildlife stays close too. Elephants, lions, leopards and cheetahs are regular visitors. Hippos sometimes wander right past the tents at night. The migration herds also stream past camp in June–July and again in October–November.
Location and Access
The camp launches game drives into both central and northern Serengeti. Seronera’s big-cat circuits are an easy drive south. Guests fly to Seronera airstrip from Arusha, or drive in via Ngorongoro. Hippo Trails combines a brilliant location with honest comfort and warm Tanzanian hosting.
Best Time to Visit
Hippo Trails delivers in every season, because the river keeps wildlife close all year. The migration passes the camp around June and July, and again in October and November. The hippo pool is busy in every month. Stay two or three nights to cover both central and northern circuits. The camp suits couples, families and photographers who want a strong location without a luxury price.
