Lake Manyara National Park may be small, but it is full of surprises. It sits at the foot of the dramatic Rift Valley wall, just a short drive from the Ngorongoro Crater. In one compact park you will find forest, grassland, a soda lake and steep cliffs. The famous writer Ernest Hemingway once called this the loveliest place he had seen in Africa.

Tree-Climbing Lions

Lake Manyara is best known for something rare: lions that climb trees. Across most of Africa, lions rest on the ground. Here, they often drape themselves over the branches of acacia trees. No one is fully sure why they do it. It may be to escape the heat, the insects, or simply to enjoy the view. Spotting one is a special safari moment.

Flamingos and Birdlife

When the water level is right, the lake turns pink with thousands of flamingos. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. You may see pelicans, storks, and fish eagles. The groundwater forest at the park entrance is fed by underground springs and stays green all year.

More Wildlife

Beyond the lions and birds, the park is home to large herds of elephants and buffalo. Hippos wallow in the shallows near the lake. Blue monkeys and baboons fill the forest canopy. Giraffes and zebras graze on the grassy plains between the forest and the lake.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from June to October, is best for spotting big animals near the water. The wet season is the top time for birds and flamingos. Many travelers visit Lake Manyara as a half-day or full-day stop on the way to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.

Where to Stay

Lake Manyara pairs perfectly with the nearby Karatu lodges and the village of Mto wa Mbu. Budget-friendly Fig Tree Lodge and Camp sits just five minutes from the park gate, with a pool and rich village culture all around. The many Karatu lodges, from Kitela Lodge to Country Lodge, are also within easy reach for a longer stay.
