Karatu, near Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate
Ngorongoro Farm House sits on a large working coffee farm at the foot of the Oldeani volcano. It is only minutes from the Lodoare gate into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The lodge feels like a grand old farmhouse from the past. Flower gardens and coffee fields spread out in every direction.
Cottage Rooms with Character
The cottage rooms are large and comfortable. Each one has a veranda and warm country-style décor. Wood, stone and soft fabrics create a cozy farmhouse feel. The rooms look out over the coffee fields toward the crater highlands. Nights are cool and quiet in the highlands.
Food from the Farm
The farm grows much of the food served here. Vegetables come straight from the organic garden each morning. The coffee on your breakfast table is grown, picked and roasted on the property. Meals are hearty and fresh, served in the large farmhouse dining room. The kitchen happily prepares picnic boxes for crater days.
Things to Do
Guests can tour the coffee plantation and learn how the beans are processed. The gardens are lovely for slow walks. There is a swimming pool for sunny afternoons. Cultural visits to Karatu town and local Iraqw villages are easy to arrange. Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe people make a fine day trip.
Location and Access
The location is the lodge’s greatest strength. The Ngorongoro gate is just minutes away. This means you can be first into the crater in the morning, when the light is best and the animals are active. Lake Manyara National Park is also close. The drive from Arusha takes about three hours on tarmac road.
Best Time to Visit
Ngorongoro Farm House works well in every season. The crater holds wildlife all year, so timing matters less here than elsewhere. June to October brings dry roads and clear views. November to May brings green hills and fewer vehicles in the crater. Highland nights are cool year-round, so bring a warm layer. One or two nights is the usual stay. It suits families, first-time safari-goers and anyone who loves farm charm with their wildlife.
