Lake Masek, Ndutu area (southern Serengeti ecosystem)
Masek Tented Lodge sits on the wooded shore of Lake Masek in the famous Ndutu area. This is where the southern Serengeti plains meet the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The lake holds water all year, so wildlife never leaves. It is one of the best locations in the whole southern ecosystem.
Luxury Tents on Raised Decks
The tents stand on raised decks and are large and elegant. Each one has a private bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers. A private terrace faces the lake and the passing animals. The design blends safari style with real luxury. Falling asleep to hippo grunts is part of the charm.
Pool, Bar and Dining
The main lodge has a welcoming restaurant, bar and lounge. There is a swimming pool for hot afternoons. Sundowner drinks over the lake are a daily ritual. The food is fresh and generous, with menus that change daily.
The Calving Season
Ndutu is the stage for the migration’s calving season. From about December to March, over a million wildebeest gather here to give birth. Lions, cheetahs and hyenas follow in amazing numbers. Off-road driving is allowed in this area. That means your guide can bring you thrillingly close to the action.
Year-Round Wildlife and Access
Outside calving season, the lake still draws elephants, giraffes and big cats. Birdlife is wonderful, including flamingos. Guests fly to Ndutu airstrip or drive in via Ngorongoro. Masek pairs real comfort with one of Africa’s greatest wildlife events.
Best Time to Visit
Masek is at its peak from December to March, during the Ndutu calving season. February usually brings the most births and the most predator action. The rest of the year, the lake keeps resident wildlife close. Three nights suits the calving season well. The lodge fits photographers, families and travelers who want front-row calving access with a proper bed, a pool and lake views.
