Lake Eyasi, southern Rift Valley
Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge looks over the shining flats of Lake Eyasi. The lake lies in the southern Rift Valley, below the Ngorongoro highlands. Few tourists come here, which makes it one of Tanzania’s most special corners. The landscape is dry, wild and beautiful.
A True Oasis
The rooms are large and cool, with private bathrooms and verandas. Palm and acacia gardens surround the lodge. There is a swimming pool, a restaurant and a bar. In this dry landscape, the lodge feels like a true oasis. Evenings are calm, with amazing sunsets over the lake.
Meet the Hadzabe and Datoga
People come to Eyasi for the culture. This is the home of the Hadzabe, one of Africa’s last hunter-gatherer peoples. Guests can join them on a dawn hunting walk with bows and arrows. The Datoga herders live here too. They are famous for their metalwork, and visits to their homes and forges are fascinating.
Wildlife and Nature
The lakeshore attracts flamingos and many other water birds. Fig-shaded springs feed green pockets in the dry land. Walks around the lake reveal a side of Tanzania most visitors never see.
Location and Access
Lake Eyasi sits about an hour’s drive south of Karatu. This makes it an easy add-on to a Ngorongoro Crater safari. Many guests stay one or two nights between the crater and the Serengeti. The lodge adds a deep human story to any Tanzania safari. It is comfort and culture in one stop.
Best Time to Visit
Lake Eyasi can be visited all year. The dry season makes travel easiest and brings the Hadzabe closer to known water points. Hunting walks start at dawn, so plan an early night before. One night is enough for the main experiences. Two nights adds time for the Datoga and the lakeshore. The lodge suits curious travelers, families with teens and anyone who wants culture alongside their wildlife.
