Kankari Lodge
Outskirts of Karatu
Kankari Lodge sits right on the safari route on the edge of Karatu town. It is placed evenly between Lake Manyara National Park and the gate to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The lodge is small, friendly and well run. Tidy gardens surround the rooms and the pool.
Two Ways to Stay
Kankari offers two styles of accommodation. There are eight rooms with private bathrooms, set in four garden cottages. There are also four luxury tents for guests who want a touch of canvas adventure. Every room and tent has a fireplace, a private terrace and quality bedding. Twin and queen beds are available, with triple setups on request.
Dining and Evenings
The cozy bar and dining room look over the swimming pool. A large outdoor deck with two fireplaces is perfect for dinners under the stars. The food is fresh and comes from local farms. Safari lunchboxes are ready for early starts.
Things to Do
Karatu town offers lively markets and brick-making kilns to explore. Coffee farm tours show how the famous highland beans are grown. Hikes lead into the nearby Ngorongoro forest. Day trips reach Lake Eyasi and its Hadzabe communities.
Location and Access
The Ngorongoro gate and Lake Manyara are both a short drive away. Tarangire National Park is within easy reach for a day trip. Arusha is about three to four hours by tarmac road, or a short flight to Lake Manyara airstrip. Kankari is a warm, well-run base for the heart of the northern circuit.
Best Time to Visit
Kankari is open in every season. The dry months from June to October suit most travelers. The green months bring fresh gardens and quieter roads. Choose a cottage room for classic comfort, or a luxury tent for a taste of canvas. One or two nights fits most itineraries. Kankari suits couples, families and anyone who wants a friendly, well-placed stop between Lake Manyara and the crater.
