Gibbs Farm
Karatu, Ngorongoro Highlands
Gibbs Farm is one of the oldest and best-loved lodges in Tanzania. It started as a coffee farm in the 1920s. Today it is a luxury farm lodge on the green slopes near the Ngorongoro Crater. The lodge sits in the Karatu highlands. The views take in flower gardens, coffee fields and the Great Rift Valley beyond.
Rooms at Gibbs Farm
The cottages are large and full of charm. Each one has a fireplace, a deep bathtub and a private veranda. The décor mixes farm history with modern comfort. Fresh flowers from the garden brighten every room. Cool highland evenings feel cozy by the fire. Many cottages look out over the coffee plantation and the forest.
Farm-to-Table Dining
Food is at the heart of the Gibbs Farm story. Most of what reaches your plate grows in the lodge’s own organic gardens. The kitchen team picks vegetables each morning. The coffee is grown, picked and roasted right on the farm. Meals are fresh, healthy and full of flavor.
Things to Do
There is plenty to enjoy beyond the table. Join a farm walk or a coffee tour. Hike through the forest toward the crater rim. Take a cooking class with the chefs. The spa offers treatments inspired by Maasai healing traditions. Birdwatchers will love the gardens, which attract many colorful species.
Location and Access
Gibbs Farm sits about 30 to 45 minutes from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. This makes early crater starts easy. Lake Manyara National Park is also close by. Lake Eyasi and its Hadzabe culture make a great day trip. The drive from Arusha takes about three hours on good tarmac road. For a luxury pause between the Crater, Manyara and the Serengeti, Gibbs Farm is hard to beat.
Best Time to Visit
Gibbs Farm is lovely all year round. The dry season, from June to October, gives the clearest skies and the best crater game viewing. The green months from November to May bring lush gardens and fewer visitors. The highlands stay cool at night in every season, so pack a warm layer. Two nights here is the sweet spot. It gives you a full crater day plus time to enjoy the farm itself. Coffee lovers, foodies and honeymooners all leave very happy.
