Mount Kilimanjaro is the roof of Africa. At 5,895 meters, it is the highest mountain on the continent and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Its snow-capped peak rises alone above the plains of northern Tanzania. Reaching the top is a dream for climbers and adventurers from every corner of the globe.
A Mountain You Can Walk Up
Unlike most tall peaks, Kilimanjaro requires no ropes or technical climbing skills. It is a walking mountain. That means fit, determined travelers with no mountaineering background can reach the summit. The real challenge is the altitude, not the terrain. Going slowly and letting your body adjust is the key to success.
Five Worlds in One Climb
Climbing Kilimanjaro is like walking from the equator to the Arctic in a week. You start in warm farmland and rainforest. Next comes open heath and moorland dotted with strange giant plants. Higher up lies a cold, rocky alpine desert. Finally, you reach the arctic summit zone of ice and snow. Few journeys on Earth pass through so many worlds.
Choosing Your Route
Several routes lead to the summit, each with its own character. The Machame route is scenic and popular. The Marangu route offers hut accommodation instead of tents. The Lemosho and Rongai routes are quieter and give more time to adjust to the altitude. Longer routes of seven or eight days give you the best chance of reaching the top.
Best Time to Climb
The best months are January to March and June to October. These are the driest and clearest times of year. The colder months may bring snow at the summit, while the warmer months are busier. We help you pick the route and season that fit your goals.
Where to Stay
Before and after your climb, a comfortable base makes all the difference. In the mountain town of Moshi, Parkview Inn offers cozy rooms, a garden and a pool to rest tired legs. In Arusha, the boutique Kahawa House is a calm, stylish place to prepare for the trek ahead or celebrate your summit.
